Bayfield Architecture was appointed to transform a dated and disjointed property into a bold, modern family home that meets the demands of contemporary living—both aesthetically and functionally.

The original house, although structurally sound, had grown tired in appearance and offered poor connectivity between spaces. A conservatory at the rear and a single-storey lean-to at the side detracted from the home’s layout and visual appeal. The existing brickwork, dark uPVC windows, and mismatched additions gave the property a fragmented appearance.

Our brief was clear: refresh and modernize the entire look and feel of the home, improve natural daylight, and reconfigure the ground floor to suit open-plan living.

To achieve this, we proposed the demolition of the conservatory and side extension, replacing both with a carefully considered wrap-around single-storey extension. This new form provided a strong, unified geometry and created generous new internal spaces for dining, living, and entertaining.

The external envelope was completely overhauled. The original red brick was over-rendered with a clean, off-white finish to give the home a crisp, modern aesthetic. Anthracite grey aluminium windows replaced the outdated frames, enhancing the home’s sleek profile while improving energy performance.

A significant design feature is the installation of two atrium roof lights within the new extension. These draw abundant natural light into the heart of the home, creating bright, uplifting spaces that feel open and connected to the outdoors throughout the day.

Large-format sliding doors at the rear open up the main living area to the garden, strengthening the relationship between inside and out, and offering uninterrupted views across the surrounding countryside.

This transformation demonstrates how thoughtful architectural intervention can not only revitalize an ageing property, but also dramatically improve how a home is used and experienced—blending clean, contemporary design with functional improvements for modern family life.
